Hall of Fame Eligibility
To be eligible for election into the Hall of Fame, a player must:
- have played in the Major Leagues in the period between 20 and 5 years prior to the election year (so, for example, to be eligible for this year's election, a player must have played between 1978 and 1993)
- have played in at least 10 seasons
- have stopped playing at least 5 years prior to the election year
- NOT be on baseball's ineligible list (as are Pete Rose and various members of the 1919 "Black" Sox)
Rule 3 carries an exception: If a player dies prior to being out of action for at least 5 years, he becomes eligible for the next election held at least six months after his death, OR the election 5 years after his retirement, whichever comes first. (This exception, by the
way, was waived for Roberto Clemente, who died on New Year's Eve in 1972 and who was inducted in 1973.)
