CAD
Computer Aided Design - software packages for engineering design using a drawings composition metaphor - normally restricted to to Euclidean coordinate systems - often used as the basis for the geometry part of a split data system

coordinate system
A term from geometry used as a basis (in a mathematical sense) of a space domain - all positions in space can be defined by a unique tuple of dimension equal to the dimension of space - a space may have many bases or coordinate systems which completely span the space. It provides the reference framework for the location of points, lines, and polygons in your database - it specifies the shape of the earth.

data conflation
The process of combining spatial data from two different sources - the problems solved by a conflation process involve the distinct between relative accuracy and absolute accuracy; matching of attributes and removal of artifacts from the deseaming of the two data sets

fractal tiling scheme
Any of a family of virtually infinite hierarchical decompostion that applies a fixed, scale independent tile decomposition

GIS
Geographic Information Systems - software that enables the capture, storage, analysis and display of digital geographic information. These software provide much more functionality than simply the ability to display maps on a computer screen. GIS software provide powerful analysis routines that allow the user to analyze relationships between and among geographic features (i.e., spatial analysis). It is this analysis capability, and the sophisticated geographic data model upon which it operates, that distinguishes GIS software from simple map display and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software.

MBB
Minimum Bounding Box

polygon
A class of spatial objects having nonzero area and perimeter, and representing a closed boundary region of uniform characteristics

recursive decomposition
The continuous subdivion of a defined data set until a specified condition is met. With Oracle SDO this condition is that the number of records in a partition is less than the defined high water mark

split data system
A geodata system that splits the maitnenance of the data between graphics and non-graphic data

tesellation
Process of determining which tiles cover a given element.
