Windows98 Information
Basic Win98 Information
- hold down [Ctrl] when the computer beeps after the power-on self test until the boot menu comes up
- run winipcfg.exe to see your current TCP/IP configuration
- Hold down the [Shift] key as you click the "x" in the last window you opened, and all the "parents" of that window will close, too.
- Windows stores your password in a file that has the extension PWL. The first part of the filename will be the same as your user name. For example, if your user name is kmahoney, then your password will be stored in a file called kmahoney.pwl. You'll find this file in the Windows folder. To remove the password prompt, begin by deleting your PWL file. Next, restart
your system, and you'll see the Enter Windows Password dialog box. At this
point, simply click OK -- don't type anything in the Password text box. You'll never be prompted for a password again.
Other Win98 Information
- have Programs menu expand automatically to multiple columns:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MICROSOFT\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced
Edit->New->String Value
type "StartMenuScrollPrograms"
double-click new value and type "FALSE"
- to fix Control Panel, Quick Launch toolbar, or desktop icons that are acting funny (display incorrectly or just plain black)
- ShellIconCache file is damaged so delete it by rebooting your computer and hold down the [Ctrl] key until the Startup menu appears, select Safe Mode, and press Enter - the go to the Windows directory and delete the ShellIconCache file - then reboot
- or edit registry and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer - then add the "Max Cached Icons" string value with a value data of "2048" - then restart Windows
